In brief: Mexico’s unemployment edges down

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest national employment survey (Enoe) which shows that the unemployment rate in September 2022 stood at 3.3% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – equating to 2m people. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 423,000 unemployed people and a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in the unemployment rate. In monthly terms, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point. The Enoe also shows that the number of people in Mexico’s economically active population who were employed in September 2022 numbered 57.5m – 2.4m more than in September 2021. According to Inegi, 4.5m people, or 7.9% of the employed population, were underemployed in September 2022, meaning they had the capacity and need to work more hours. This represents a decrease of 2.2m people as compared to September 2021.
