Lula faces challenge to unite Brazil after edging Bolsonaro
The most polarised electoral process in Brazil’s recent history concluded on 30 October with former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011) of the left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) winning 50.9% of the vote to 49.1% for President Jair Bolsonaro of the right-wing Partido Liberal (PL). Bolsonaro is the first Brazilian president to lose a re-election bid and his defeat marks the end of an electoral process marred by misinformation and political violence. Yet, protests calling for a military coup in the aftermath of the election show that Lula faces a tall order uniting Brazil.
