BRAZIL: Fake news uncontained

Brazil’s general election four years ago was widely considered to have been blighted by fake news. Although disinformation and distortions of facts had featured in previous electoral cycles, the scale of fake news and the role played by social media in spreading it in the 2018 elections was unprecedented. Fake news went on to be a constant feature of the four years that followed, often spread by President Jair Bolsonaro himself and his supporters. Implementing safeguards against disinformation ahead of the October 2022 elections was therefore of paramount importance to the country’s institutions.
