HONDURAS/REGION: Heavy rains and flooding wreak major damage

Tropical Cyclone Julia, the tenth named storm and the fifth hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, hit Central America last month, wreaking major devastation and compounding the impacts of an already active rainy season. Over 1.6m people across Central America and Colombia have been affected and at least 38 people died, with reports of significant damage to housing and related displacement, agriculture, and health and educational infrastructure. This once again highlights the region’s particular vulnerability to climate change and high exposure to natural dangers which also include droughts, and landslides, the impact of which serves as a major push factor in migration. Indeed, a recent report by US-based humanitarian aid, relief, and development NGO International Rescue Committee (IRC) singled Honduras out as one of the top five places in the world to bear the brunt of the world’s climate emergency.
