Miguel Díaz-Canel and his Chinese counterpart
Xi Jinping have met in Beijing and announced a string of agreements, including a donation of US$100m from China to help Cuba address basic goods shortages and the impact of
Hurricane Ian which hit the island in late September. Díaz-Canel’s visit was the last leg in a tour which also took in
Russia, Algeria and Turkey. According to Cuba’s economy minister,
Alejandro Gil, who was part of the delegation, the two sides signed a total of 12 agreements including on China’s global infrastructure plan, Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and agreed that China would restructure Cuba’s debt. Gil also said China had agreed to quickly finish construction on a floating dock, among other projects.
