In brief: Trucker protests threatening exports, warns Peruvian business lobby

* The president of Peru’s association of exporters (Adex), Julio Pérez Alván, has said that an ongoing strike by lorry drivers is harming foreign trade and risks damaging Peru’s international credibility. Pérez said that in northern regions such as Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad, between 20% and 25% of fresh fruit is being lost, and that cacao producers in Cajamarca are losing around US$3m per week. In addition, Pérez predicted export delays through December and January as a knock-on effect of the strikes, which he said would “put contracts with international clients at risk and affect the image of our country as a trustworthy supplier.” Since 22 November, truck drivers have blocked roads in various regions of Peru to demand a reduction in petrol prices and in road tolls.
