In brief: Pacific Alliance summit to be held in Peru

* Peru’s Foreign Minister César Landa has announced that a summit of the Pacific Alliance trade bloc will be held in Lima on 14 December, after Peru’s congress denied President Pedro Castillo permission to attend a since-suspended summit in Mexico City on 25 November. Castillo will be joined in Lima by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Chile’s Gabriel Boric, and Colombia’s Gustavo Petro. The trip marks a rare foreign visit from López Obrador, who rarely leaves Mexico and who condemned congress’s decision to bar Castillo from attending the original summit as a “humiliation”. At the summit, Peru will assume the rotating presidency of the Alliance.
