Paraguay has been consumed by a scandal sparked by revelations that the son of the president of the supreme court (CSJ), a lawyer, represented a Brazilian citizen arrested for drug trafficking and seeking a ‘legal way out’ of extradition to the US. President Mario Abdo Benítez called upon the president of the CSJ, Antonio Fretes, to consider tendering his resignation, while the political opposition presented an impeachment motion in congress against the magistrate, decrying something rotten at the heart of Paraguay’s judiciary.
