URUGUAY/REGION: Differences laid bare at Mercosur summit

Tensions were running high ahead of the latest Southern Common Market (Mercosur) summit, which took place in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo from 5-6 December. The event occurred amid disagreements between Uruguay and the bloc’s other members – Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay – over Uruguay’s unilateral negotiation of trade agreements, which violates Mercosur rules. Although little was solved at the summit, a somewhat uneasy truce was made, and members pledged to work through their differences together.
