GUATEMALA: Acquittal of former First Lady raises eyebrows

High-risk judge Claudette Domínguez has dismissed a case against former first lady (2008-2012) Sandra Torres, of Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE), regarding alleged illicit campaign finance dating back to 2015. The ruling would appear to clear the way for Torres to run for the presidency in the June 2023 general elections, making her a major contender. It has, however, been slammed by anti-corruption crusaders such as Juan Francisco Sandoval, who led the attorney general’s special anti-corruption unit (Feci) until his dismissal in 2021 by widely discredited attorney general, Maria Consuelo Porras, on whose watch the fight against corruption has been weakened. It comes amid decisions by the electoral authorities (TSE) regarding candidacies which have also been criticised, fanning existing fears [WR-22-40] regarding the electoral process.
