US to expel more migrants to Mexico

Mexico: On 5 January, Mexico’s foreign ministry (SRE) announced that it had agreed to accept migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua and Haiti expelled from the US under Title 42 – a measure allowing US authorities to rapidly expel asylum-seeking migrants of certain nationalities to Mexico. On the same day, the US government led by President Joe Biden had announced new enforcement measures which it said would increase security at the US-Mexico border and reduce the number of irregular border crossings. Among these measures was a plan to expand the application of Title 42 to Cubans, Nicaraguans and Haitians who arrive at the US land border to seek asylum. According to a US government statement, Mexico had agreed to accept expulsion of 30,000 individuals a month from these countries, as well as Venezuela. Alongside the expulsions, the US announced it would allow up to 30,000 migrants a month from Nicaragua, Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela to come to live and work in the US for two years, provided they have a US-sponsor and appropriate documentation. The SRE said it “welcomed the announcement of new US actions to achieve ordered, safe, regular and humane migration”, saying the programme would create “a new method of orderly, safe and regular entry into the US, while significantly reducing irregular migration flows in the region.” Title 42, which human rights groups have condemned as a violation of migrant rights and US law, was due to be lifted on 21 December but this was blocked at the last minute by the US supreme court.
