In brief: Chile’s trade surplus grows

*Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released new figures which show that Chile’s exports in January totalled US$8.9bn while imports totalled US$6.3bn, leaving a trade surplus of US$2.6bn. This is up from December 2022, when exports totalled US$8.9bn and imports totalled US$7bn, leaving a trade surplus of US$1.9bn. The trade surplus coincides with a weak performance of copper exports - of which Chile is the leading global exporter – which totalled US$4.3bn in December 2022 and dropped to US$3.0bn in January 2023.
