REGION: A dire year for press freedom in Central America

In December, the US-based press freedom group Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) warned that 2022 was the most violent year for the press in Latin America and Caribbean for the last two decades – a situation which it says is “especially critical” in El Salvador, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Guatemala, citing the resurgence of “caudillista [strongman] political regimes”. Here we explore concerns regarding this issue with regard to Central America, which have been raised by other press freedom organisations such as international NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) as well as human rights groups like US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW).
