REGION: Capacity and resilience building for Caribbean small island states

In January the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) announced that the World Bank (WB) had provided US$40m to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Regional Health Project to improve health facilities and laboratory capacities, strengthen public health systems and emergency management, institutional capacity building, project management and coordination, and contingency emergency response. The needs of all Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have steadily risen up the international agenda since the 1992 United Nations (UN) Conference on Environment and Development first recognised SIDS as a special case in development, but the combination of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the increasing urgency of tackling climate change has given an added impetus to the search for solutions.
