Partial electoral reform pushed through

The issue of electoral reform came to a head at the end of last year. In November, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposed changes to the electoral system prompted widespread protests across the country as tens of thousands came out against the proposals and in support of the country’s national electoral institute (INE). A counter-demonstration was staged in Mexico City (CDMX) two weeks later by those unwavering in their support for the president. Congress finally approved legal reforms relating to the electoral system in December, prompting INE head Lorenzo Córdova to state that “2023 promises to be one of the greatest challenges for democracy in our country”.
