COLOMBIA: Petro takes big gamble by firing Gaviria

President Gustavo Petro’s divisive health reform bill has exposed ominous cracks in both his cabinet and his legislative alliance [WR-23-07]. In a bid to steady the ship, on 27 February Petro fired his education minister, Alejandro Gaviria – the leading critic of the reform from within the government. Removing Gaviria may have been politically expedient, but Petro will have raised the hackles of other dissenting cabinet ministers who are now likely to feel that there is no room for disagreement with the president. Meanwhile, the moderate legislators in congress whose votes Petro will need for the reform to pass were largely unimpressed with the ousting of an influential centrist from the government.
