In brief: Chile reduces working week

* Chile’s federal lower chamber of congress has approved a bill to reduce weekly working hours from 45 to 40. The bill was first proposed in 2017 and passed the senate in November 2019. An official statement said the majority of deputies believed the bill would have a positive impact for Chilean families. Speeches given in the lower chamber highlighted the benefits that the change will bring to workers such as greater quality of time, allowing up to five additional days of annual leave, catering for condensed working (the working week fit into four days), and allowing for shared parental responsibilities for parents of children under twelve. However, some expressed concerns about the economic impact of the bill, especially in a time of economic crisis, as well as what this means for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and production costs. The law, which has now passed to the executive for promulgation, will be implemented gradually: 44 hours in the first year, 42 hours in the third year, and 40 hours in the fifth year. Chile’s President Gabriel Boric celebrated the bill via Twitter, saying it was “a pro-family initiative aimed at ensuring a good life for all”
