Introduction

“Unprecedented in Latin American recent history”. This was the assessment by Tamara Taraciuk, the Americas director for US-based NGO Human Rights Watch, of the recent decision by Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega to strip over 300 Nicaraguan citizens of their nationality. In line with the ongoing crackdown on dissent, Ortega’s latest move has drawn condemnation not just from international institutions but from his South American peers, as the first piece in this April 2023 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America explores.
