Latin American Regional Report: Mexico begins with the landmark trial of Mexico’s former drug czar, Genaro García Luna, in New York. On 21 February, García Luna, who headed up Mexico’s public security ministry under former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and was a key lieutenant in the so-called war on drugs, was found guilty of accepting bribes from the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) while leading the very organisations created to combat criminal groups. The trial has unearthed a wide web of corruption in Mexico, as this piece explains.
