Introduction

Honduras’s defence ministry recently announced that in the first quarter of 2023 over 1.8m coca plants were seized and seven drug processing laboratories destroyed. The latest signs of coca cultivation in Honduras follow the March 2023 release of the US State Department’s latest annual International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR) which singled out the issue in Honduras as “troubling”. The first piece in this May 2023 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America considers coca production in Honduras and Guatemala, which the INCSR also flagged up in its report.
