BRAZIL: Centrist-led congressional committee to probe 8 January riots

Brazil’s congress has begun its inquiry into the 8 January riots, when supporters of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) attacked government institutions in the capital. In a boost for the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT)-led coalition government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the joint select inquiry committee (CPMI) chose as its chair on 25 May federal deputy Arthur Maia, a member of centre-right party, União Brasil (União), rather than a far-right legislator aligned with Bolsonaro and his allies, who may have sought to shift blame for the riots onto the current government’s alleged incompetence in protecting the capital. The CPMI has 180 days to carry out its investigation.
