MEXICO: High stakes as state elections approach

On 4 June, inhabitants of Estado de México (Edomex) and Coahuila states will take to the polls to elect new governors. For one party in particular, there is much to lose. If the centrist opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) fails to retain its governorships in both Edomex and Coahuila, it will no longer govern any state outright, ending decades of state-level dominance. The elections therefore represent the party’s last chance to retain any state presence and reassert its electoral relevance.
