GUATEMALA: Tensions rise as TSE orders review of election results

Hopes that the surprisingly strong performance of anti-corruption presidential candidate Bernardo Arévalo in the first round of Guatemala’s 25 June elections could augur a change to the discredited political establishment [WR-23-26] are fast dissipating. A week after the election, which catapulted Arévalo seemingly from nowhere to face an establishment figure in the form of former first lady (2008-2012) Sandra Torres in the 20 August presidential run-off, the electoral authority (TSE) has suspended certification of the results after accepting a constitutional court (CC) decision ordering a review of the votes.
