In brief: Brazilian airlines reach agreement with gov’t for lower fares

*Brazil’s three largest airlines, Azul, Gol, and Latam, have unveiled a scheme to reduce air travel costs, as part of a plan reached in coordination with the minister for ports and airports, Silvio Costa Filho, called the ‘Programme for the Universalisation of Air Transport’. The airlines will offer reduced fares for tickets bought up to 14 days before departure, offer discounts on certain days of the week, and offer a greater range of flights by expanding their fleets. Speaking at a press conference alongside the directors of the airlines, Costa Filho said that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government “has looked for ways to lower the cost of air travel and, as a result, solutions that help the end consumer. In order to have more accessible prices for Brazilians we need a collective effort and constant dialogue [with the private sector]”.
