In brief: Colombia grants first fracking licence

* Colombia’s environmental licencing authority (Anla) has approved the country’s first fracking project, authorising pilot operations by state-owned oil company Ecopetrol in Puerto Wilches municipality, Santander department. The granting of the fracking licence has triggered a backlash from local environmental NGOs, with one activist collective, the Alianza Colombia Libre de Fracking (ACLF), arguing that campaigners opposing the project had received death threats. ACLF criticised “the false discourse of [President Iván] Duque, who sells himself abroad as a defender of the environment while accelerating fracking projects in Colombia that would generate emissions well beyond those [reductions] that he classifies as ‘ambitious’”. Ecopetrol insists that it has policies to prevent and mitigate impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, and waterways.
