In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has reminded that he will be meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinz? Abe during his trip to Tokyo, Japan, for the G-20 summit next week, and said he hopes to reach an agreement for Japan and Brazil to jointly exploit the Brazilian Amazon region’s biodiversity. Despite criticism from environmentalist groups, Bolsonaro defends the economic exploitation of resources in the Amazon, included in protected territories. Brazil’s Environment Minister Ricardo Salles recently affirmed that the government will make the most of the G-20 summit to present proposals to attract foreign investment for conservation and exploitation projects in the Amazon.
