Corruption allegations force cabinet reshuffle

In mid-November Uruguay’s main trade union organisation Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT) staged anti-government protests over the issue of corruption. The demonstrations were in response to a scandal involving a passport obtained in 2021 by Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset, whose whereabouts are unknown, which forced President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou to reshuffle his cabinet in November, replacing the ministers implicated.
