Land management practices fuel wildfires, experts warn

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) released a statement on 5 February describing the 2024 wildfire season in Chile as the deadliest on record. The statement recognised that extreme fires are expected to increase globally by up to 14% by 2030 due to climate change. However World Weather Attribution (WWA), a scientific collaboration studying extreme weather phenomena, reported on 22 February that land management practices, such as plantations of highly flammable monocultures, have also been significant drivers of Chile’s wildfires.
