Outrage over expulsion of opposition senator

Kattya González, a senator for Paraguay’s opposition centre-left Partido Encuentro Nacional (PEN), went on a hunger strike on 10 February. She was protesting against what she said were efforts by the ruling centre-right Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) to advance legislation that could amend the constitution to allow for presidential re-election. On 14 February the senate, in which the ANR-PC holds a majority, expelled González, a move seen by the opposition as an affront to Paraguay’s democracy.
