In brief: Brazil’s Petrobras discovers offshore oil deposit

*Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petrobras has announced that it has discovered a new offshore oil deposit in the Potiguar basin, near the equatorial margin. The discovery was made in the Anhangá exploratory well, located 190km from Fortaleza, capital of Ceará state. In a press release, Petrobras highlighted that it plans to invest US$3.1bn in exploration in the equatorial margin from 2024-2028, with plans to set up 16 new exploratory wells in the area during this period. The company’s efforts to explore more oil in the equatorial margin have been criticised by environmental groups. In May last year, the federal environmental regulator (Ibama) also blocked a licence for Petrobras to explore oil in the ecologically sensitive waters of the Amazon Delta.
