Colom wins presidential run-off

In his third bid for presidency, social democrat Álvaro Colom of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) won the second round of presidential elections on November 4, beating former general Otto Pérez Molina of right-wing Partido Patriota (PP) by 52.8% of the vote to 47.2%. Colom will be sworn in on January 14, becoming the first president from the centre left since the end of the country's 36-year-long civil war in 1996.
