GUATEMALA: Colom's first moves

Following the victory of Unidad de la Esperanza Nacional (UNE) candidate Alvaro Colom in the presidential run-off on 4 November, much speculation surrounds his course of action once he actually takes office on 14 January 2008. Critics remain sceptical over the likelihood of him achieving his campaign promises and highlight the lack of a complete majority in congress as evidence of the need for continued negotiations with other political parties.
