Costa Rica's President Oscar Arias went on a state visit to China at the end of October, some five months after he led Costa Rica to switch diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China. [RC-07-06] Arias met China's three most senior political figures - President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and president of the national people's congress, Wu Bangguo - a clear sign of Costa Rica's geopolitical importance to China as a foothold in Central America, one of Taiwan's last strongholds and the only area where China still lacks official economic contacts.
