EL SALVADOR: Funes launched as FMLN presidential candidate
Mauricio Funes was officially launched as the presidential candidate of the left-wing opposition, Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), on 11 November. Funes -who is popular, young and media-savvy -breaks the trend of grizzled old veteran guerrillas chosen to lead the FMLN in previous presidential elections. The slogan for the launch, which took place in a stadium in San Salvador, was "Comienza la esperanza" ("Let hope begin").
