COSTA RICA/NICARAGUA: Both sides hail ICJ ruling

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued its first ruling on the dispute between Costa Rica and Nicaragua over the controversial project by Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega to dredge the San Juan River which divides the two countries. Remarkably the 8 March ruling has been hailed as a “victory" by both sides and while only provisional, with the sovereignty of the disputed area still under review, it appears to have defused a significant source of bilateral tension in the immediate term at least.
