ARGENTINA: Fernández and Lavagna launch their campaigns

Cristina Fernández, President Néstor Kirchner's wife, is now officially the presidential candidate for the ruling coalition, Frente Para la Victoria (FV). Her main competitor is former economy minister Roberto Lavagna, best known for steering Argentina out of the 2001 slump and favourably renegotiating its external debt. Fernández remained the clear favourite in polls right up to the eve of her nomination, though there are signs that her husband's popularity - on which her candidacy rests - is slipping.
