ECUADOR: Correa reaches historic milestone

When President Rafael Correa took office in 2007 Ecuador had just been through a tumultuous decade under seven different heads of state. On 15 January he celebrated a significant landmark: his fifth anniversary in power. When he finishes his term next year he will be the joint longest-serving Ecuadorean president in history, and if he seeks, and wins, re-election, in January 2013 he will enter entirely unchartered waters. It would also mark a ninth straight electoral triumph, including three referendums.
