DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: PRD struggles to present united front

The opposition Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) acted early on in holding its primary to select a presidential candidate in March 2011. However the contested nature of the election, which saw pre-candidate, PRD party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado dispute the narrow victory by former president Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004) has exposed divisions within the party which could damage its chances in the 20 May presidential election.
