This is a frantic and fraught time for Mexico’s political parties. All of them are scrambling to nominate their candidates for federal senate and lower chamber seats without triggering splits which could cost them ground in municipalities and states. The three main parties have all picked their presidential candidates who now, like all candidates for public office, have gone into a six-week closed-season (which began on midnight 15 February). During this closed-season the parties and their prospective candidates are not allowed to campaign. Candidates have to register by 22 March and the election campaigns restart at midnight on 29 March, and thus become a three-month sprint to election day on 1 July.
