Barely six months after coming to power President Ollanta Humala's government delivered the most crushing blow to Peru’s guerrilla group Sendero Luminoso since the capture of its leader Abimael Guzmán three decades ago. Florindo Eleuterio Flores Hala, alias ‘Artemio’, was seized by security forces from a hut in the Alto Huallaga valley on 12 February. His capture marked the end of an era as Artemio was the last member of Sendero’s old central committee. In marked contrast to former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) after the capture of Guzmán, Humala behaved with calm dignity, and eschewed triumphalism.
