ECUADOR: Media battle is part of wider war

A beaming President Rafael Correa celebrated the unanimous verdict of Ecuador’s top court, the Corte Nacional de Justicia (CNJ), on 16 February against the directors of the national daily El Universo. The ruling has been widely criticised as an attempt by Correa to muzzle the opposition press, and the independence of the judiciary has been questioned. The case was just the most visible battleground, however, in the Correa administration’s wider war to discredit opposition critics.
