Talking shop with the US. On 5 March Bolivia’s deputy foreign minister, Juan Carlos Alurralde, announced that preparations were under way for the first Bolivia-US meeting (date as yet unspecified) on trade cooperation, within the framework of the bilateral agreement struck last November providing for the complete restoration of diplomatic ties. The announcement follows the
first bilateral meeting since the 7 November accord. The 7 November agreement ruled out the re-establishment of Bolivia's trade preferences under the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (Atpdea), which is contingent on anti-drugs cooperation, but instead provides for the establishment of a new bilateral trade council through which cooperation will be channelled. Recently, Alurralde also said that an exchange of ambassadors was unlikely to take place before June.
