In Brief - Argentina

Argentina | Fernández names general prosecutor’s replacement. On 10 April President Cristina Fernández proposed Daniel Reposo, who currently heads the Sindicatura General de la Nación Argentina (Sigen), a body that carries out internal auditing processes and responds to the executive, as Esteban Righi’s replacement as general prosecutor. Reposo will now have to undergo a selection process put in place by former president Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007): the designation has to be published in the official gazette and two national papers for three days; civil society groups, human rights advocacy groups and academics then have 15 days to submit documents backing or opposing the candidate’s appointment; then the government has 15 days to submit the formal designation documents to the senate; and finally, Reposo will have to submit documentation to the senate and be interviewed in a public hearing, after which the chamber will vote. Reposo needs a two-thirds majority approval to secure the post
