PERU:Sendero strikes back with audacious kidnapping

The ‘real’ Sendero Luminoso (SL) is alive and kicking. That was the message that guerrillas from the SL faction operating in the valley of the Apurímac and Ene rivers (Vrae) sought to convey after briefly taking 36 workers for the giant Camisea gas consortium hostage on 9 April. At least four members of the security forces lost their lives in a large-scale operation to free the hostages. Less than two months earlier President Ollanta Humala had announced his intention to step up the pursuit of the leader of the Vrae faction, Víctor Quispe Palomino ‘Camarada José’, after the security forces delivered a crushing blow to the SL faction in the more northerly Alto Huallaga valley by capturing its leader Florindo Eleuterio Flores Hala, alias ‘Artemio’. This was a brazen sign ‘José’ was not cowed by Humala’s words.
