Fatal landmine explosion in Chile-Peru border. On 27 May Peru’s foreign ministry released an official statement calling for Chile to “urgently complete the bilateral cooperation process to remove the landmines planted in the common border”. The statement comes after Chilean authorities confirmed the death of a Peruvian national on 25 May, when he drove his car over an anti-tank mine after crossing into Chile near through a sanctioned road near the 14th border marker. The incident was also lamented by a Peruvian former president, Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), who said that “this was an accident, but I suggest that we [both countries] continue to speed up the process to remove mines from the border”. The Chilean government has pointed out that that it has disposed of some 50,000 landmines since 2002. However, many more remain and the dangers were highlighted earlier in the year when intense rains in Arica triggered a landslide that exposed dozens of mines,
