PRD to hang on in Mexico City

With the chance to be in charge of a M$138.43bn (US$9.8bn) budget and to design policies for a city of 21.2m people, being the head of the Mexico City (DF) government provides a good opportunity for any politician to raise his or her national (and international) profile. Consequently, it is no surprise that Mexico’s main political parties all fielded mayoral candidates for the capital in the 2012 general election. Since the four political groupings backing the mayoral and federal presidential candidates are the same, the campaigns for the 1 July ballot have often crossed. Yet the two races are proving very different.
