EL SALVADOR: Funes makes big political gesture

For its size El Salvador has the largest population living overseas of any Latin American nation. So, when President Mauricio Funes told assembled deputies during his state-of-the-nation address to congress on 1 June that he has prepared a bill to extend the vote to Salvadoreans living abroad it was a big announcement. Marking the completion of the third of his five years in power, Funes said it was high time expatriates were linked to the country by more than just remittances. He said the new law should take effect in time for the next presidential elections in March 2014. The country’s two principal parties, the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) and the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), have both promised to support the proposal.
