DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: PRD electoral defeat takes its toll

A bitter power struggle is well under way in the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) following its defeat in the 20 May presidential elections [RC-12-06]. As it stands, the in-fighting between the factions loyal to former presidential candidate, Hipólito Mejía, and PRD party president, Miguel Vargas, suggest that far from presenting a united opposition to president-elect Danilo Medina, when his Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) government takes office in August, the PRD could well rupture.
