BOLIVIA: Morales faces police crisis

President Evo Morales has come under pressure on various fronts to address the crisis in the police force. At the end of May he replaced General Jorge Santiesteban, his sixth police chief in as many years, due to corruption allegations; however, his choice of a replacement proved controversial. The following month, the police staged nationwide revolts over demands for better wages and labour conditions – unrest which exposed resentment within the institution stemming from Morales’s perceived preferential treatment of the military (FFAA).
