Peru has now consolidated itself the second largest cocaine producing country, according to the latest report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc). Unodc believes that Peru has a higher sun-dried coca leaf production potential than Colombia, the largest cocaine producer, which means that, technically, it could produce more cocaine than its Andean neighbour. Peru has now become the centre of attention for those organisations leading the global fight against drugs and drug trafficking. This certainly increases the pressure on the Peruvian government to come up with credible strategies to address the spread of coca cultivation; rather than deflecting the pressure, Peru is embracing it as an opportunity to secure greater international support.
